Michael Anthony "Mike" Eruzione (* 25. October 1954 in Winthrop , Massachusetts ) is a retired American ice hockey player of Italian descent and captain of the US national ice hockey team , which at the Winter Olympics in 1980 , the gold medal won.

Career

Eruzione scored the winning goal in the game against the USSR . The victory of the USA against the then overpowering Soviet Union went down in sports history as Miracle on Ice .

He was drawn in 1974 in the second round in 28th place in the WHA Amateur Draft by the New England Whalers and never played in the NHL , but two seasons in the IHL with the Toledo Goaldiggers . In the 1977/78 season he was awarded the Ken McKenzie Trophy . In 1979 he moved to the US national team and ended his active career there after winning the gold medal. He later became a sports commentator, primarily at the New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils Games, and at the Olympics for ABC and NBC television.

He then returned to his University in Boston and has been Director of Development for Athletics ever since . He is a member of a number of Halls of Fame . The 2004 film, Miracle , is largely based on his memories and those of then coach Herb Brooks .
