Valerie Bowman Jarrett (born November 14, 1956 in Shiraz , Iran ) is an American lawyer , businesswoman and politician . She became known as a longtime advisor to the 44th President of the USA , Barack Obama .

Life

Jarrett was born Valerie Bowman in Shiraz, where her father, Dr. James Bowman, who ran a children's hospital as part of a development aid program. In 1961 the family moved to London and in 1963 they returned to Chicago . Her father is of African American descent and Professor Emeritus of Pathology and Medicine from the University of Chicago . Her great-grandfather was the first African American to graduate from MIT , and her grandfather was the first black to head the Chicago Housing Authority .

After graduating from Northfield Mount Hermon Boarding School in New England in 1974 , Jarrett earned a B.A. in Psychology from Stanford University in 1978 and a JD from the University of Michigan in 1981. She also speaks Persian and French .

Professional activities

Jarrett began her political career in 1987 as an assistant to the Mayor of Chicago, Harold Washington . In the 1990s she became deputy chief of staff to Mayor Richard M. Daley and in 1991 hired Michelle Robinson , then girlfriend and future wife of Barack Obama. Jarrett was also a 1992-1995 Delegate of Planning and Development ( Commissioner of the Department of Planning and Development act). From 1995 to 2005, she chaired the Chicago Transit Board .

Jarrett has been a businesswoman since 1995, most recently as CEO of the housing company The Habitat Company . Jarrett was also a member of the governing bodies of various institutions and organizations, such as B. the German Marshall Fund , the Chicago Stock Exchange , the Chicago Museum of Science and History of Technology, and the University of Chicago .

Until the Obama administration took office , she served as chair of the Obama-Biden Transition Project . From 20 January 2009 to 20 January 2017 she headed the Office of Public Engagement and Intergovernmental Affairs , the Liaison Office of the White House to the individual states and municipalities. Following her work in the White House, Jarrett et al. a. worked in an advisory capacity for the Obama Foundation and together with Arne Duncan , her former colleague in the Obama administration, was appointed to the board of directors of the investment company Ariel , of which her father was also a member and whose chairman is also a long-time friend of the Obamas.

Private

Jarrett was married to William Robert Jarrett from 1983 to 1988. They have a daughter together, who is married to the son of Canadian MP Bas Balkissoon .
