Arne Duncan (born November 6, 1964 in Chicago ) is an American politician ( Democrat ). He was the Secretary of State for Education of the United States from January 20, 2009 to January 1, 2016 .

Life

Arne Duncan was born in 1964, the son of the professor of psychology at the University of Chicago , Starkey Duncan and his wife Susan. He studied sociology at Harvard and graduated in 1987 with a thesis on The values, aspirations and opportunities of the urban underclass magna cum laude .

From 1987 to 1991 Duncan played in the National Basketball League for the South East Melbourne Magics in Australia.

In 1992, Duncan became the director of the Ariel Education Initiative , a program for the education of children in South Side , Chicago. From 1998 Duncan worked for the Chicago Public Schools , a year later Duncan was promoted to deputy chief of staff. In 2001 he was named Chief Executive Officer of the Chicago Public Schools by Richard M. Daley . On December 16, 2008, President- elect Barack Obama announced that he would elect Duncan as the new Secretary of Education.

In October 2015, he announced that he would be stepping down at the end of the same year. He was succeeded by John King .

His wife Karen is Australian. The couple have two children.
