Margaret Spellings , née Margaret Dudar (born November 30, 1957 in Michigan ) is an American politician ( Republican Party ). She was the United States Secretary of Education from 2005 to 2009 .

The nomination of Michigan native Margaret Spellings as Secretary of Education to succeed Roderick Paige was confirmed on January 20, 2005 by the US Senate . She previously served as the President's Personal Assistant for Home Affairs, where she was responsible for planning and executing White House policies on education, health, labor, transportation, justice, housing, and other elements of President George W's domestic agenda Bush . She was also one of the authors of the No Child Left Behind Act .

Prior to joining the White House, Spellings served as a senior advisor to Governor Bush in Texas for six years . As part of this activity, she was responsible for planning and implementing the governor's educational policy. She was involved in implementing the Texas Reading Initiative to Promote Reading Skills in Elementary School Children, the Student Success Initiative to Promote Upgrading Education, and the most effective school assessment and accountability system ever in the United States. She also made proposals to the governor for the most important posts in the governor's office.

After her tenure in the Bush Cabinet , which ended on January 20, 2009, she took on an advisory role with the Boston Consulting Group .
