Richard Michael Daley (born April 24, 1942 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American politician . He was Mayor of Chicago from 1989 to 2011 .

Richard Michael Daley is the fourth child and eldest son of former Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley . He grew up in the southwest Chicago borough of Bridgeport . In the 1970s, Daley was a member of the Illinois Senate and then from 1980 to 1989 the Cook County attorney . In 1983 he ran for the mayor's office for the first time, but lost. In 1989 he was finally able to prevail. One of his goals was to turn the shores of Lake Michigan into a park. He was heavily criticized for a controversial action to close the Meigs Field airfield shortly after his re-election in 2003. In this election he received 79% of all votes, leaving the other three candidates far behind. In 2010 he announced that he did not want to run for office again and resigned on May 16, 2011.

Like his father, Daley is known for being one of the strongest and most influential figures in Illinois politics and deeply rooted in the state's Democratic Party . On December 25, 2010, he broke his father's record as the longest-serving mayor of Chicago.

On November 30, 2004, Daley's son Patrick announced that he had joined the US Army . He is the first and only living son of Richard Daley. His second son (Kevin) died of spina bifida in 1981 at the age of 33 months . In April 2005, Time Magazine named Daley one of the five best-serving mayors of major US cities.
