Alson Sherman

Alson Smith Sherman (born April 21, 1811 in Barre , Vermont , †  September 27, 1903 in Waukegan , Illinois ) was an American politician . He was mayor of Chicago in 1844 and 1845 .

Career

Nothing is known about Alson Sherman's youth and schooling. He later moved to Chicago, where he ran the city's first sawmill . He was also one of the first ice cream sellers in the then still young city. From 1841 to 1844 he headed the local fire department . Politically, he joined the Independent Democratic Party . This had split off in Chicago from the Democratic Party , which at the time had a reputation for corruption.

The mayoral elections of 1844 had to be repeated in Chicago on charges of fraud and corruption. The original election winner and incumbent Augustus Garrett also ran in the repeat election and was defeated by Alson Sherman. He was now able to complete a one-year term as head of the city administration. He ensured that the fire brigade was better equipped. In 1850 he became a curator of Northwestern University . Since 1856 he lived in Waukegan, about 40 miles north of Chicago. He died there on September 27, 1903 at the age of 92.
