Augustus Garrett (* 1801 in New York City , †  November 30, 1848 in Chicago , Illinois ) was an American politician . Between 1843 and 1846 he was mayor of Chicago twice.

Career

Married to Eliza Clark in 1825, Augustus Garrett lived in the then young city of Chicago from 1834, where he ran an auction house. A year later he entered into a partnership that allowed him to work on a larger scale from auctioneer and land speculator. By October 1836 he had achieved sales of $ 1.8 million, an enormous sum for the time.

Politically, Garrett joined the Democratic Party . In 1843 he was elected mayor of Chicago. He initially held this office for the then customary one-year term until 1844. In that year he was re-elected. However, this election was canceled due to allegations of fraud and corruption. Garrett also stood in the second election in 1844, which became necessary, and was defeated by Alson Sherman , who ran as an independent Democrat. A year later he was re-elected mayor of Chicago for a year. Overall, he held this office twice from 1843 to 1844 and from 1845 to 1846.

Augustus Garrett had no children. After his death on November 30, 1848, his widow founded the Garrett Bible Institute , in which the family's fortunes were invested. It still exists today under the name Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary .
