Alexander Loyd (born August 19, 1805 in Orange County , New York , †  May 7, 1872 in Lyons , Illinois ) was an American politician . In 1840 and 1841 he was the fourth mayor of the city of Chicago .

Career

Alexander Loyd's last name is also sometimes spelled Lloyd. In 1833 he came to Chicago, which was just being founded at the time. He ran a haberdashery and grocery store and soon became a building contractor. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . In 1835 he became a member of the city council. He was also a member of the Chicago Volunteer Fire Department, which he headed for a year in 1838.

In the mayoral election of 1840, he beat incumbent Benjamin Wright Raymond of the Whig Party . This allowed him to serve as mayor of Chicago for a year. In 1842 he became the curator of the schools in the second school district in his city. In 1850 he moved back to the city council, where he stayed for a few years. Otherwise he continued his professional career. Alexander Loyd died on May 7, 1872 in Lyons, a suburb of Chicago.
