Charles McNeill Gray

Charles McNeill Gray (born March 7, 1807 in Sherburne , Chenango County , New York , †  October 17, 1885 in Chicago , Illinois ) was an American politician . In 1853 and 1854 was the mayor of Chicago.

Career

Nothing is known about Charles Gray's youth and schooling. He first worked in the construction industry. He had to give up this activity after an accident. From 1834 he was based in Chicago. There he was a road officer and a member of the fire department. In the meantime he was employed by various entrepreneurs in the city. Around 1844 he was an independent candle maker. He later became a freight agent for the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railroad .

Politically, Gray joined the Democratic Party . In 1853 he was elected mayor of Chicago to succeed Walter S. Gurnee . He held this position during a term in office in 1853 and 1854. After the end of his time as mayor, he continued his previous activities. He died in Chicago on October 17, 1885.
