Martin H. Kennelly

Martin Henry Kennelly (* 11. August 1887 in Chicago , Illinois ; † 29. November 1961 ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party and mayor of Chicago .

Life

The son of a worker from Ireland who died in 1889 in a packaging factory for food, graduated from the De La Salle Institute in Chicago in 1905 . During the First World War he did his military service in the US Army and left it with the rank of captain .

On April 15, 1947, he succeeded Edward Joseph Kelly as Mayor of Chicago. During his tenure, the population peaked in 1950 with 3.62 million people. In 1951 he was re-elected as mayor for a second four-year term. On April 20, 1955, Richard J. Daley succeeded him in the office of mayor.
