John Putnam Chapin
John Putnam Chapin (born April 21, 1810 in Bradford , Orange County , Vermont , † July 27, 1864 in Chicago , Illinois ) was an American politician . He was mayor of the city of Chicago in 1846 and 1847.
Career
Prior to his time in Chicago was John Chapin in Haverhill ( New Hampshire ) engaged in trade. In 1832 he came to Chicago, which at that time was not even officially founded. It was founded in 1833. He acted as a partner in a trading company until 1843, which then dissolved. He then worked for the Canal Boat Transportation Company . Politically, he joined the Whig Party and was a member of the city council on several occasions.
In 1846, Chapin was elected mayor of Chicago for a year with over 55% of the vote. His term of office passed without any significant incidents. After the Whigs dissolved, he joined the new Republican Party . Meanwhile he was also Vice President of the Chicago Board of Trade . John Chapin died in Chicago on July 27, 1864.
