Julian Sidney Rumsey

Julian Sidney Rumsey (born April 3, 1823 in Batavia , Genesee County , New York , †  April 20, 1886 in Chicago , Illinois ) was an American politician . He was mayor of Chicago in 1861 and 1862.

Career

Nothing is known about Julian Rumsey's youth and schooling. From 1835 he lived in the then still young city of Chicago, where he worked in his uncles' company, which was involved in the grain trade. He later joined this company. In doing so, he developed a system for grain inspection and evaluation that was often used later.

Rumsey was closely linked to Chicago history for over 50 years. He became a member of the Republican Party founded in 1854 . In 1861 he was elected mayor of Chicago for one year. In this capacity he supported the Union cause in the civil war . Rumsey held other offices over the years. So he was district treasurer and president of the Chicago Board of Trade . He also got into banking and was President of the Corn Exchange National Bank during the Depression of 1873 . He died in Chicago on April 20, 1886.
