Monroe Heath

Monroe Heath (born March 27, 1827 in Grafton , New Hampshire , †  October 21, 1894 in Asheville , North Carolina ) was an American politician . Between 1876 and 1879 he was mayor of Chicago .

Career

Nothing is known about the youth and schooling of Monroe Heath. In 1849 he went to California , where he participated in the gold rush with some success . In 1851, he founded the Heath & Milligan Manufacturing Company in Chicago , which manufactured paint. He then became the head of this company. The company burned down twice and had to be rebuilt by him. Politically, he joined the Republican Party . Between 1871 and 1876 he was a member of the Chicago City Council.

In 1876, Heath was elected mayor of Chicago in a special court-appointed election. He held this office between 1876 and 1879. He died on October 21, 1894 in Asheville and was buried in Chicago. He had four children with his wife Julia Dickerman.
