John Charles Haines

John Charles Haines (born May 26, 1818 in Deerfield , Oneida County , New York , †  July 4, 1896 in Waukegan , Illinois ) was an American politician . Between 1858 and 1860 he was mayor of Chicago .

Career

Nothing is known about John Haines' youth and schooling. From 1834 he lived in the then still young city of Chicago. Since 1846 he has operated several flour mills there together with a partner. Since 1854 he was also involved in expanding the water supply for the city of Chicago. At the same time he embarked on a political career. From 1848 to 1854 he sat on the city council. He was twice the Chicago water officer; In 1874 he entered the Illinois Senate .

In 1858, Haines was elected mayor of Chicago. He held this office after being re-elected between 1858 and 1860. His party membership is stated differently in the sources. Possibly he switched from the Democrats to the Republicans . Haines also served on the Chicago Historical Society's board of directors and his city's health committee. In 1869 he took part as a delegate to a constitutional convention of the state of Illinois. He spent the rest of his life on his small farm near Waukegan, where he died on July 4, 1896.
