Lori Elain Lightfoot (born August 4, 1962 in Massillon , Ohio ) is an American lawyer and Democrat politician . She's since 20. May 2019, the 56th Mayor of Chicago ( Illinois ).

Lori Lightfoot studied at the University of Michigan ( Bachelor of Arts in Political Science 1984) and at the University of Chicago ( Juris Doctor 1989).

In the election on February 26, 2019, none of the nine candidates received an absolute majority. In the runoff election on April 2, 2019, Lightfoot received 73.70% of the vote and Toni Preckwinkle 26.30%. The turnout was 32.89%. She is the second female mayor of Chicago after Jane Bryne . She is also the first black woman to head the city and the first openly gay city leader in Chicago.

She is married to Amy Eshleman and has an adopted daughter.
