John A. Roche

John A. Roche (born August 12, 1844 in Utica , New York , †  February 10, 1904 in Chicago , Illinois ) was an American politician . He was mayor of Chicago from 1887 to 1889.

Career

Nothing is known about the youth and schooling of John Roche. From 1869 he lived in Chicago, where he worked as a machine dealer. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In June 1888 he took part as a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Chicago, at which Benjamin Harrison was nominated as a presidential candidate. In 1873 he was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives.

In 1887 Roche was elected mayor of Chicago. He held this office between 1887 and 1889. His term of office passed without any particular incident. After his time as mayor, he worked in the elevator industry, among other things. He was the manager and vice president of the Crane Elevator Company and, as managing director, a member of the board of directors of the Otis Elevator Company . In 1893 he became president of the Lake Street Elevated Railroad Company . From 1894 he was a curator of the Lewis Institute , today's Illinois Institute of Technology . He later became its chairman. He died in Chicago on February 10, 1904.
