Donald Allan "Don" Ashby (born March 8, 1955 in Kamloops , British Columbia , † May 30, 1981 in Kelowna , British Columbia) was a Canadian ice hockey player who worked for the Toronto Maple Leafs , Colorado Rockies and Edmonton Oilers from 1975 to 1981 played in the National Hockey League .
Career
Don Ashby began his career as a hockey player with the Kamloops Rockets , for which he was active in the British Columbia Hockey League in the 1971/72 season . After three years with the Calgary Centennials from the Western Hockey League , the attacker was selected in the first round of the 1975 NHL Amateur Draft as the sixth player of the Toronto Maple Leafs . In his first season in the National Hockey League , Ashby came to 50 missions, in which he scored 21 points scorer, including six goals. In his four years in Toronto, the Canadian also played regularly for their respective farm teams , the Oklahoma City Blazers and the Dallas Black Hawks from the Central Hockey League and most recently the New Brunswick Hawks from the American Hockey League .
On March 13, 1979, Ashby and Trevor Johansen were given to the Colorado Rockies in exchange for Paul Gardner . By the end of the 1978/79 season Ashby was still in eleven games for the Rockies on the ice, while he played in the following season mainly for their farm team from the Central Hockey League, the Fort Worth Texans . For this reason, Ashby was given to the Edmonton Oilers on February 25, 1980 by Colorado in exchange for Bobby Schmautz .
Ashby was also used sporadically by Edmonton, so that he was active for the majority of the 1980/81 season for their farm team Wichita Wind from the Central Hockey League, with whom he reached the final of the Adams Cup , but in seven games at Salt Lake Golden Eagles lost. On the way back from the last final game, Ashby and his wife were involved in a traffic accident, the consequences of which the Canadian later died in hospital at the age of 26.
