The playoffs for the Stanley Cup of 1942 began on March 21, 1942 and ended on April 18, 1942 with the 4-3 victory of the Toronto Maple Leafs against the Detroit Red Wings . The Maple Leafs won their fourth title and their first since 1932 , while they were the first team in league history to catch up 3-0 down in the final and still win the series 4-3. This has happened after them until today (as of the 2019 playoffs) only three more times, in 1975 ( New York Islanders ), 2010 ( Philadelphia Flyers ) and 2014 ( Los Angeles Kings ), but so far not again in a Stanley Cup final. At the same time, 1942 marked the first final, which went over the full distance of seven games, but the best-of-seven mode was only introduced with the playoffs in 1939. The defeated Red Wings, who in the person of Don Grosso had the best goalscorer and scorer in their ranks, had to accept their second defeat in the final after they failed 4-0 at the Boston Bruins last year .

mode

The six best teams in the league qualified for the playoffs. The first two teams in the final table played one of the two finalists directly in a first semi-final. The four remaining teams faced each other in two quarter-finals, with the third on the seeding list meeting fourth and the fifth against sixth. The quarter-finals finally culminated in the second semi-final, which determined the second finalist. The first semi-final and the Stanley Cup final were held in best-of-seven mode , while in the quarter-final series and the second semi-final series, two victories were enough to advance and thus played in best-of-three mode.

In series with a best-of-seven mode, the higher seeded team had home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, the home law changed from game to game. The higher-ranked team had a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games. In series with a best-of-three mode, home rights changed from game to game, so that the higher-ranked team played in front of their home crowd in the first and decisive third game. It should be noted, however, that there were regular deviations from the distribution of home rights presented for various reasons.

Overtime followed for games that remained tied after 60 minutes of regular playing time . It ended with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) .
