The Chiliques is a stratovolcano in the Andes of northern Chile in San Pedro de Atacama . The conical mountain with a summit height of 5778  m rises visible from afar above the Altiplano . It has an almost circular summit crater around 500 m in diameter in which there are two lakes. The volcano has so far been considered extinct because it has not erupted for at least 10,000 years and has shown no other activity. However, it was discovered in 2002 that magma resides below the surface in the crater and on the upper flanks . It is an important mountain sanctuaryfor the local population, with a number of prehistoric cult and logistics facilities, some of which are estimated to be more than a thousand years old. At its summit is an Inca cult site from the 15th century.
