Leonard Wayne Merrick (born April 23, 1952 in Sarnia , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player . The center played over 800 games between 1973 and 1984 for the St. Louis Blues , California Golden Seals , Cleveland Barons and New York Islanders in the National Hockey League . With the Islanders he spent most of his career and won four Stanley Cups with them .

Career

Wayne Merrick was born in Sarnia and played there in his youth for the Sarnia Black Hawks before joining the Ottawa 67’s in the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA), the highest-ranking junior league in his home province, for the 1969/70 season . In the 67's, the center established itself as a regular scorer, so he scored 95 scorer points in 62 games in the 1971/72 season and was then selected in the NHL Amateur Draft in 1972 in ninth position by the St. Louis Blues . After 22 games with the Denver Spurs in the Western Hockey League , the farm team of the Blues, Merrick earned himself a regular place in St. Louis in the further course of the 1972/73 season. With 28 goals and 37 assists from 76 games, the attacker achieved his personal career best in his second full NHL season before he was handed over to the California Golden Seals in November 1975 after just over three years in the organization of the Blues . In return, St. Louis received Larry Patey and a third-round vote for the 1977 NHL Amateur Draft . In California, Merrick ended the current season and moved the franchise to Cleveland in the summer of 1976 , where the team was henceforth called Cleveland Barons . After his first and only complete season with the Barons, he represented his home country with the Canadian national team at the 1977 World Cup , where he finished fourth.

After Merrick had missed part of the 1977/78 season due to injuries, he was given in January 1978 together with Darcy Regier and a four-round suffrage in the 1978 NHL Amateur Draft to the New York Islanders . In return, Jean-Paul Parisé and Jean Potvin moved to Cleveland before the team merged with the Minnesota North Stars at the end of the season . The Islanders, on the other hand, represented one of the emerging teams in the league, which was to establish its own era with four Stanley Cup victories in a row from 1980 to 1983. Merrick played mainly in a row with John Tonelli and Bob Nystrom and was entrusted with them mainly with defensive tasks, but especially in the playoffs, the trio also managed a number of decisive goals, some in overtime . Merrick himself scored the game-winning goal in the last game of the Stanley Cup final in 1981 , while this year with 18 points from 18 games should also produce his personal best playoff statistics. After the Canadian had missed the fifth title in a row with the Islanders in the 1984 final and was instead defeated by the Edmonton Oilers , he declared his active career over.

In total, Merrick scored 210 goals with 505 points scorer in 876 NHL games. After the end of his career, he was involved in broadcasts for the New York Islanders as a TV expert and from then on worked full-time in the insurance industry.
