Gordon Thomas Lawrence "Gord" Lane (born March 31, 1953 in Brandon , Manitoba ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player , coach and scout , who in the course of his active career between 1970 and 1987, among other things, 614 games for the Washington Capitals and New York Islanders has played in the National Hockey League on the position of defender . In the service of the New York Islanders Lane, who embodied the player type of the Enforcer , won the Stanley Cup four times in a row in the early 1980s .
Career
Lane spent his junior years in the Western Canada Hockey League between 1970 and 1973 . There he went in the first two years of play for the Brandon Wheat Kings from his hometown on the ice before the defender was transferred to the New Westminster Bruins . With the Bruins he completed the 1972/73 season . Following this, Lane was selected in the NHL Amateur Draft 1973 in the ninth round in 173rd place by the Pittsburgh Penguins from the National Hockey League .
The defensive player switched to the professional field after the draft in the summer of 1973, but ignored by the Penguins. He completed his first professional season with the Fort Wayne Komets in the International Hockey League , followed by two successful years with the Dayton Gems in the same league. With the team he won in the 1975/76 season , in which he made his debut in the NHL for the Washington Capitals , the Turner Cup . Before the 1976/77 season Lane was finally taken as a free agent by the capital club from Washington under contract. He immediately won a regular place in the franchise squad and played for the Capitals for the next three years. In December 1979, the defender, who was in a contract dispute with the management and had threatened an early retirement, was transferred to the New York Islanders in exchange for Mike Kaszycki .
The most successful six years of Lane's career followed in the service of the Islanders. Between 1980 and 1983, the Enforcer won the Stanley Cup four times in a row with the New York Islanders, led by Mike Bossy and Bryan Trottier and coached by Al Arbor . A fifth title was the team by the defeat in the finals of the Stanley Cup playoffs 1984 , which Lane missed due to an injury, thwarted by the Edmonton Oilers to Wayne Gretzky . Lane was seen in retrospect as the main defensive player of the Islanders dominance in the early 1980s. He was one of 17 players who saw all four of the Islanders' title wins.
At the end of the 1984/85 season , the 32-year-old defender retired as an active player from professional business after a total of 614 NHL missions and 1442 penalty minutes. He supervised the Brandon Wheat Kings in the Western Hockey League as head coach for a year, before moving to the American Hockey League as a playing assistant coach for the Springfield Indians for the 1986/87 season. In the following year - after his final career as a player - he was primarily responsible for the gang of the team. After the season 1987/88 his engagement there ended. He then worked between 1990 and 1993 as a scout at his ex-club New York Islanders.
