Steven John Payne (born August 16, 1958 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who, among other things, played 684 games for the Minnesota North Stars in the National Hockey League on the position of the left winger during his playing career between 1976 and 1988 has denied. The two-time All-Star scored in the course of the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 1981 with 17 goals, the most hits among all players.
Career
Payne spent a brief but successful junior period between 1976 and 1978 with the Ottawa 67’s of the Ontario Major Junior Hockey League . After he had already scored over 20 goals in his rookie season , he was in the 1977 playoffs a decisive factor in winning the J. Ross Robertson Cup , to which he contributed 18 scorer points in 19 playoff games . In his second league year, the attacker scored 69 goals and a total of 114 points in 68 appearances. This gave him in the 1978 NHL Amateur Draft the selection by the Minnesota North Stars from the National Hockey League in the second round in 19th overall position.
For the 1978/79 season , the 20-year-old finally switched to the professional field and spent the season with the North Stars in the NHL, while he also came to some assignments for their farm team , the Oklahoma City Stars in the Central Hockey League . After the season he took part with the Canadian national team at the 1979 World Cup in the Soviet capital Moscow . He reached fourth place with the maple leaves , to which the striker contributed two goals in seven tournament games. As a result, Payne continued to run for Minnesota and completed his statistical best in his second year of ten years in the league. He scored 42 goals and prepared another 43, which earned him the first-time invitation to the NHL All-Star Game . In the following game year he reached the final series for the Stanley Cup with the Minnesota North Stars as part of the Stanley Cup playoffs in 1981 , in which the team was subject to the New York Islanders . Payne made a significant contribution to reaching the final series with a total of 17 hits - the most among all players. He scored five goals in the five finals alone.
Despite the lost final, Payne remained loyal to the Minnesota North Stars over the following years and contributed - as in all previous years - always over 50 scorer points to the success of the team. In 1985 he received his second invitation to the NHL All-Star Game. With the beginning of the 1985/86 season , injuries began to affect the Canadian again and again. After he had only been able to play 79 games for the franchise between autumn 1985 and spring 1988 , he announced the end of his active career in the summer of 1988 at the age of 29. In the ten NHL seasons, Payne played 684 games for the North Stars, including the playoffs, scoring 536 points.
