Eric Stefan Persson (born December 22, 1954 in Umeå ) is a former Swedish ice hockey player (defender) who played for the New York Islanders in the National Hockey League from 1977 to 1986 .

Career

After he had played in Sweden at Piteå IF and Brynäs IF , he finished second at the Ice Hockey World Championship in 1977 with the Swedish national ice hockey team .

In the 1974 NHL Amateur Draft , the New York Islanders secured the rights to him in the 14th round. For the 1977/78 season he moved to the Islanders and immediately prevailed. He and Anders Kallur were the first Europeans to win the Stanley Cup in 1979 . In the following three years he won the Cup with the then outstanding Islanders. He stayed with the Islanders until the 1985/86 season . He then played for a few years in the third-class Swedish Division 1 at Borås HC .

He later served as the general manager of the Swedish junior national team.
