Walter Deutsch (born April 29, 1923 in Bozen / South Tyrol ) is an Austrian musicologist specializing in folk music research .

Live and act

German began his training in a seminar for music education in Innsbruck, after the war and imprisonment he continued it first in Innsbruck and then in Vienna.

Walter Deutsch was a ballet repetiteur at the Vienna Volksoper . In 1963 he was appointed lecturer at the Art Academy for Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. In 1965 he founded the Institute for Folk Music Research and headed it until 1993. From 1992 to 1999 he was President of the Austrian Folk Song Society and since 1999 has been its Honorary President.

In individual federal state studios of the ORF , he still moderates programs relating to folk music, such as the show Fine in Carinthia , stay together or in Lower Austria stop - folk music treasures .

In his honor, the Federal Ministry for Education, Science and Culture created the "Walter German State Prize" in 1994 . This prize is awarded every two years in recognition of special achievements in the field of folk music research.
