The Institute for Folk Music Research and Ethnomusicology is a university training center and part of the Vienna State University for Music and Performing Arts in Austria . The tasks of the institute are research and teaching, assigned to the departments of folk music research and ethnomusicology .

history

The Institute for Folk Music Research and Ethnomusicology at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna was founded in 1965 as the second such institute at an Austrian music university (at that time "Music Academy") as an Institute for Folk Music Research; The institute's founder, university professor Walter Deutsch, was institute director and professor for the history and theory of folk music until 1991 . The work at the institute followed the tradition of the “Vienna School of Folk Music Research”.

In 1994, after her appointment , Gerlinde Haid also took over the management of the institute. The research fields and the range of methods were successively expanded. The music of minorities became an important topic. International cooperation was intensified, the PhD program was established.

In 2002 the name of the institute was supplemented with the addition of ethnomusicology. In 2003 the research center for European polyphony was established at the institute. In 2007 the 39th world conference of the International Council for Traditional Music (ICTM) took place under the organization of the institute. On January 1, 2011, Gerlinde Haid handed over the management of the institute to Ursula Hemetek . Ulrich Morgenstern has held the professorship for the history and theory of folk music since 2012. Since October 2019, the institute has been offering its own master’s degree in ethnomusicology.

The general secretariat of the International Council for Traditional Music (ICTM) is anchored at the institute. The general secretary has been the institute director Ursula Hemetek since 2017 . The general secretariat and seven study groups of the International Council for Traditional Music (ICTM) are connected to the institute:

  • International Council for Traditional Music (General Secretary: Ursula Hemetek)
  • Music and Minorities (Secretary / Treasurer: Hande Sağlam)
  • Multipart Music (Chair: Ardian Ahmedaja)
  • Music, Gender and Sexuality (Chair: Marko Kölbl)
  • Applied Ethnomusicology (Secretary / Treasurer: Wei-Ya Lin)
  • Music and Dance of the Slavic World (Chair: Ulrich Morgenstern)
  • Music and Dance in Latin America and the Carribean (Steering Committee member: Javier Silvestrini)

Research and Teaching

An essential feature of the institute is the combination of the two subjects of ethnomusicology (Vienna School of Comparative Musicology) and the Austrian tradition of folk music research. At the institute, methodological fundamentals - musical field research, transcription and analysis - are further developed and conveyed in a location-specific manner. The institute is dedicated to the scientific research of music and dance in traditional and resulting or additional scenarios; Central fields are the preoccupation with the music of minorities and the practical teaching of traditional music ( Rudolf Pietsch ). The institute is active in holding seminars, symposia and lectures, often in an interdisciplinary and international setting, as well as in participating in international discourses on the subject. Another task of the institute is the regular publication, the issuing of scientific writings and audio documents.

archive

The institute has an extensive audio and video archive consisting of field research material that has been collected since the institute was founded. This material is continuously archived and digitized. The archive is a source for employees, students and interested parties and acts as a knowledge repository for the institute as well as for the respective communities themselves. Currently, more than 6000 hours of research recordings are archived.
