Gerd Grupe

Gerd Grupe (born October 7, 1955 in Langenfeld in the Rhineland ) is a German ethnomusicologist .

Life

Grupe studied comparative musicology , American studies and library studies at the Free University of Berlin , where he received his doctorate in 1990 with a dissertation entitled Kumina-Gesänge: Studies on Traditional Afro-Jamaican Music .

In 1996 he completed his habilitation with a study on the Mbira music of the Shona, which was published as a book in 2004. At the same time, Grupe u. a. taught at the universities in Berlin, Frankfurt am Main, Hildesheim, Bayreuth, Graz and Krems.

Since 2002 he has been Professor of Ethnomusicology at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz . His research interests include a. the music of sub-Saharan Africa, African-American music and gamelan as well as cross-cultural, comparative questions.
