Joseph Hector Marini (* 27. January 1957 in Timmins , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player , who during his playing career from 1974 to 1985 among other 164 games for the New York Islanders and New Jersey Devils in the National Hockey League on the Has contested the position of the right winger . In the service of the New York Islanders, Marini won the Stanley Cup twice in 1981 and 1982 . In his only full NHL season, he was nominated as a member of the New Jersey Devils for the 1983 NHL All-Star Game . But mainly he played in the minor leagues .

Career

Marini spent his junior years between 1974 and 1977 with the Sudbury Wolves in the Ontario Major Junior Hockey League . In these three years of play, the right winger was able to increase from 31 to 77 to 91 points and was finally selected in the third round of the 1977 NHL Amateur Draft in 50th position by the New York Islanders from the National Hockey League . In the 1975/76 season Marini reached the final series of the J. Ross Robertson Cup with the Wolves team .

In the 1977/78 season, the Canadian finally switched to the professional sector as a member of the New York Islanders franchise . Mainly Marini came in his first year as a professional with the Muskegon Mohawks in the International Hockey League , but also played sporadically games for the Fort Worth Texans from the Central Hockey League . For this he was then exclusively active in the following game year. Except for this, however, was his NHL debut for the Islanders. As a result, the attacker still failed to make it to the NHL. Between 1979 and 1981 he was on the ice for the Indianapolis Checkers in the CHL. It was not until February 1981 that he succeeded in serving in the NHL for a longer period of time. At the end of the Stanley Cup playoffs in 1981, this led to Marini winning the trophy of the same name with the Islanders for the first time . In the 1981/82 season , the winger was still a member of the Islanders squad, but came only sporadically to minutes. Nevertheless, he repeated the title win of the previous year with the team.

Shortly before the start of the 1982/83 season , Marini was given a four-round vote in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft from the New York Islanders to the New Jersey Devils . As compensation, these received New York’s four-round voting rights for the same draft. With the Devils, the striker completed his only complete NHL season with 77 appearances. With 45 points, he was the team's sixth-best scorer at the end of the season and represented the club - to his own amazement - as the only player in the 1983 NHL All-Star Game . In the following season Marini could not build on the performances of the previous year and so he had only four points scorer in early January 1984 after 32 games. The almost 27-year-old was sent to the American Hockey League following a knee injury , where he played for the Maine Mariners until the beginning of the 1985/86 season. He also ran this season for the Fort Wayne Komets in the IHL. There he was hit by a puck in the left eye during a game against his ex-club Indianapolis Checkers in December 1985 . It was so damaged in the process that it had to be surgically removed a few days later and Marini had to end his career prematurely at the age of 28.
