George Reginald "Red" Horner (born May 29, 1909 in Lynden , Ontario ; † April 27, 2005 in Toronto , Ontario) was a Canadian ice hockey player who played for the Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League from 1928 to 1940 .
Career
Red Horner began his career as a hockey player with the Toronto Marlboros , for which he was active from 1926 to 1929 in the Ontario Hockey Association . After he had started the 1928/29 season with the Marlboros, the defender was committed on January 20, 1929 by the Toronto Maple Leafs from the National Hockey League , for which he played for a total of twelve years until 1940. During this time, Horner and his team only missed the playoffs in the 1929/30 season and won the Stanley Cup with his team in 1932 . This was the first win of the prestigious trophy for both him and the Toronto St. Patricks successor team , the Toronto Maple Leafs.
After retiring from professional ice hockey, Horner became a businessman and lived in Florida and Toronto . In 1965, he was surprisingly inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame , despite never being considered an exceptionally good player, which sparked some controversy over this decision. This decision is mainly due to the fact that Horner received the most penalty minutes of all NHL players for eight consecutive seasons and also had the most penalty minutes of all NHL players until Ted Lindsay broke that record in the late 1950s.
Red Horner died on April 27, 2005 at the age of 95 and was buried in Toronto.
