Career
Thomson spent his junior career between 1943 and 1945 with the Toronto St. Michael's Majors . With the team, the defender won the Memorial Cup in 1945 .
After his time with the juniors Thomson stayed in Toronto and signed as a free agent a contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs from the National Hockey League . This put him in his first professional season mostly with the Pittsburgh Hornets in the American Hockey League . From the 1946/47 season Thomson was a regular player of the Maple Leafs. In the years that followed, he particularly benefited from his playing structure, which made him a major contributor to Toronto's supremacy in the late 1940s and early 1950s. During this time he won the Stanley Cup with the team between 1947 and 1951 within five seasons a total of four times with the team.
The defender, who was the best point player in his position in the 1947/48 season and the Stanley Cup Playoffs 1949 , stayed in Toronto for a total of eleven years. During this time he was invited to the NHL All-Star Game seven times and was appointed to the NHL Second All-Star Team twice at the end of the season . He also acted temporarily in the 1956/57 season as their team captain . In August 1957, Thomson's Toronto time came to an abrupt end when he was sold to the Chicago Black Hawks . Together with Ted Lindsay he had tried to found a players' union, which he had fallen out with Toronto President Conn Smythe . In Chicago, which also had Lindsay, but had signed a transfer deal, Thomson only played a year. In the summer of 1958, he ended his active career at the age of 31.
Thomson died in May 1991 at the age of 64 of complications from a heart attack in Toronto, his adopted home.
