2. National Hockey League All-Star Game

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 2nd National Hockey League All-Star Game was played on November 3, 1948 in Chicago . The game took place at Chicago Stadium , home to the Chicago Black Hawks . The NHL All Stars won 3-1 against the Stanley Cup winner, the Toronto Maple Leafs . For the Maple Leafs it was the second defeat in the second All-Star Game. The game was watched by 12,749 spectators.

After Bill Tobin , the President of the Chicago Black Hawks, had campaigned very intensively last year for the introduction of the All-Star Game, contrary to the usual rule, he received that the Stanley Cup winner of the previous year may host the game, the confirmation for the game in Chicago. Officials were invited to dinner at the LaSalle Hotel by the Chicago Daily News prior to the game . It was here that those responsible also met Thomas E. Dewey , who, as the Republican candidate, had his headquarters there shortly before the presidential election . The event opened with speeches from Clarence Campbell , Conn Smythe , James Norris , Syl Apps , president of the NHL's pension fund, and Lou Boudreau , president of the Cleveland Indians , then World Series winner in Major League Baseball .

The time when the game took place this year was unusual. In the previous year and the following 20 years, the All-Star Game was played shortly before the start of the season. This year the season had already been underway for three weeks. The All-Stars arrived the evening before the match day and had no opportunity to train together in advance. The players from the First and Second All-Star Team elected at the end of the preseason were nominated . Of this, coach Tommy Ivan only had to do without Turk Broda , who was on the Maple Leafs squad, and Buddy O'Connor , who was injured in a car accident on the way to the training camp. The coaches had the option of choosing three players for the All-Star team, but they were not allowed to vote for any player from their own team. The first named player received five points, the second three and the third one point. Ted Lindsay received the maximum number of points with 25 points. After each NHL team was represented by at least three players, the choices for Tommy Ivan were very limited.

The Maple Leafs had to do without their championship team of Syl Apps and Nick Metz , who both ended their careers before the start of the season.

Course of the game

The players remembered Bill Mosienko's serious injury and played very cautiously with little physical contact. Hap Day was unable to use Howie Meeker , who was handicapped by an injury, and mostly replaced him with Joe Klukay . He used the All-Star Game and tested a variant in which he always set up complete blocks with five players over the entire game and thus consistently brought the same defenders with the same attackers.

The first half of the middle third was particularly lively. Not only were all four goals scored here, there was also a heated argument between Gordie Howe and Gus Mortson . The two were not put on the common penalty bench, as was customary at the time, but separated by the police during their sentence. As in the previous year, Toronto lost to the All-Star Team.
