The Matthews Arena (formerly: Boston Arena ) is an ice rink in Boston in the US state of Massachusetts . It is the oldest ice rink in the world that is still in operation.

The ice rink was opened on April 16, 1910 as the Boston Arena and is now located at the eastern end of Northeastern University , which is now also the owner of the stadium. The arena was the first home ground of the Boston Bruins and New England Whalers ice hockey teams, as well as the Boston Celtics from the National Basketball Association .

The sports facility kept the name Boston Arena until 1982, when the stadium, also known as the Northeastern Arena, was given its current name, Matthews Arena , dedicated to the university member George J.
