Mikko Matti Mäkelä (born February 26, 1965 in Tampere , Finland ) is a former Finnish ice hockey player who from 1985 to 1997 for the New York Islanders , the Los Angeles Kings , the Buffalo Sabers and the Boston Bruins in the National Hockey League and for the Düsseldorfer EG played in the DEL . He won the bronze medal at the 1994 Olympic Games in Lillehammer and the silver medal at the 1992 Ice Hockey World Championship in Prague .

Career

Mäkelä began his professional career in 1983 with the Finnish first division club Tampereen Ilves . During the NHL Entry Draft 1983 , the New York Islanders secured the transfer rights to him and pulled him in the fourth round to a total of 65th position. He moved to the Islanders for the 1985/86 season and played there until the end of 1989. Then he was given to the Los Angeles Kings . After his contract in Los Angeles was not renewed, he moved to the Buffalo Sabers in the summer of 1990 . After a season in Buffalo, he returned to Finland.

Two years at TPS Turku followed before he moved to the Swedish Elitserien at Malmö IF . The 1994/95 season began with the Tampereen Ilves, but then moved back to the National Hockey League. This time the Boston Bruins were his team, but he only played eleven games there and spent the playoffs with the Bruins farm team, the Providence Bruins in the American Hockey League .

His next stop was Germany. From the 1995/96 season he played for the Düsseldorfer EG for two years and became German champions with the DEG . Again he moved to Sweden, this time to Södertälje SK . Again he stayed for only a year and then went back to Finland at the end of his career, where he played his last season in 1998/99 with Tappara Tampere . In 2002 he took over the coaching job in Canada with the Lethbridge Hurricanes in the Canadian junior league Western Hockey League , but was released from service during the season.
