Kjell William Alf Samuelsson (born October 18, 1958 in Tingsryd ) is a former Swedish ice hockey player and current coach, who played for the New York Rangers , Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins in the National Hockey League from 1976 to 1999 has played. Since 2009 he has been an assistant coach for the Adirondack Phantoms in the American Hockey League .

Career

Kjell Samuelsson began his career as an ice hockey player in his hometown with Tingsryds AIF , for whose professional team he was active from 1976 to 1983 in the then second-rate Division 1 . The defender then played for Leksands IF in the Elitserien for two years . During this period he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 1984 in the sixth round as a total of 119th player by the New York Rangers , for which he made his debut in the National Hockey League in the 1985/86 season . He gave a template in a total of 18 games in his rookie year . However, he spent most of the season with their farm team from the American Hockey League , the New Haven Nighthawks .

On December 18, 1986, Samuelsson was transferred from the Rangers along with a second-round suffrage in exchange for Bob Froese to the Philadelphia Flyers , for whom he was in the NHL for the next five years before he was on the ice in February 1992 Pittsburgh Penguins was surrendered. With these he won the prestigious Stanley Cup for the first and only time in his career at the end of the season . In the summer of 1995 the Swede returned to Philadelphia, for which he ran for three years. The 1998/99 season began the right-handed shooter at VEU Feldkirch from the Austrian ice hockey league , for which he was active in eight competitive games before he signed with the Tampa Bay Lightning from the NHL. There he ended his active career at the end of the season.

Immediately after his career, Samuelsson was assistant coach for the Trenton Titans from the East Coast Hockey League for the 1999/2000 season , before moving to the franchise of his ex-club Philadelphia Flyers. There he became assistant coach of the AHL farm team. In this role he was active until the relocation of the team in 2009, where he took over the position of head coach of Craig Berube , who only looked after the team on the first six match days, in the 2006/07 season . Since the 2009/10 season , the 1991 world champion has been an assistant coach in the relocated AHL farm team of the Flyers, the Adirondack Phantoms .

International

For Sweden Samuelsson took part in the 1991 World Cup, where he and his team became world champions.
