Geoff Lawton Courtnall (born August 18, 1962 in Duncan , British Columbia ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player and coach who played 1205 games for the Boston Bruins , Edmonton Oilers , Washington Capitals , St Louis Blues and Vancouver Canucks played in the National Hockey League on the left winger position . Courtnall celebrated his greatest career success in the service of the Edmonton Oilers when he won the Stanley Cup in 1988 . His brother Russ was also a professional ice hockey player.
Career
The 1.83 m tall winger was signed on July 6, 1983 as a free agent by the Boston Bruins , for whom he played from the 1983/84 season to 1988. After his engagement in Boston he was transferred to the Edmonton Oilers together with Bill Ranford in an exchange deal for the goalkeeper Andy Moog , with whom he won the Stanley Cup in the 1987/88 season. Four months later, Courtnall moved to the Washington Capitals , which he left after two years for the St. Louis Blues. At the beginning of his career, the left-shot was on the ice for both the NHL franchises and farm teams in the American Hockey League , it seemed as if Courtnall would never make it into the NHL due to his many injuries.
After just one season in St. Louis, the striker moved to Vancouver in an exchange deal involving six players . With the Vancouver Canucks Courtnall was again in the finals for the Stanley Cup in the 1993/94 season , but the New York Rangers around Mark Messier were too strong an opponent. After two years he returned to St. Louis, where he ended his career after the 1999/2000 season. With 70 assists in NHL playoff games, Geoff Courtnall is one of the top ten players on the left winger position in the all-time leaderboard in this category.
Between 2007 and 2009 Courtnall coached the Victoria Grizzlies from the British Columbia Hockey League .
