Career
As a player
Krushelnyski began his career in 1978 in his hometown of Montreal with the Junior de Montréal in the Canadian Junior League Québec Major Junior Hockey League . Just one year later, during the 1979 NHL Entry Draft , those in charge of the Boston Bruins secured the transfer rights to the left-handed shooter when they selected him in the sixth round in a total of 120th position. In the summer of 1980 he moved to the American Hockey League for the Springfield Indians , where he was able to achieve 26 goals and 29 assists in his first season . For the 1981/82 season he joined the Erie Blades , the then farm team of the Boston Bruins. During the season he completed in addition to the 62 games in the AHL, also 17 NHL games.
In the following year he was a member of the regular team of the Boston Bruins and reached the conference finals of the play-offs with his team, but was eliminated there with 2: 4 defeats against the New York Islanders . Krushelnyski played a big part in this success with his eight goals in the play-offs. Already during the regular season he got 65 points scorer in 79 league games.
On June 21, 1984, the management of the Bruins gave Krushelnyski to Edmonton, who received Ken Linseman in return . In the following four years with the Edmonton Oilers , the center was able to win the Stanley Cup , the championship of the NHL, three times (1985, 1987, 1988). His time with the Oilers was the most successful of his entire ice hockey career. In Edmonton he also played with Wayne Gretzky and was nominated for the NHL All-Star Game in 1985 by fans and journalists .
While Krushelnyski played an offensive role in his first season 1984/85 in Edmonton, the team's coach at the time, Glen Sather , assigned him a more defensive part from the 1985/86 season . So it happened that his point yield was more than halved compared to the previous year. Nevertheless, his qualities at the face-off point as well as his offensively and defensively balanced style of play were important for winning the championship in 1987 and 1988.
In 1988, after four seasons with the Oilers, he was given first-round draft rights in 1989 , 1991 , 1993 and a sum of money to Los Angeles with Wayne Gretzky and Marty McSorley in exchange for Jimmy Carson , Martin Gélinas transferred. At the Los Angeles Kings he was able to build on his good performance and scored a total of 89 games 67 times. Already during the 1990/91 season he left the Kings again and was handed over to the Toronto Maple Leafs on November 9, 1990 for John McIntyre . With the Maple Leafs he reached the conference finals of the play-offs in 1993 and 1994, but retired there with his team.
In the summer of 1994 he signed a contract with the Detroit Red Wings as a free agent , but only came to 28 NHL games due to the players' strike at the beginning of the 1994/95 season and lost the final of the Stanley Cup against the Red Wings New Jersey Devils with 0-4 wins. After the season, his contract in Detroit was not renewed and Krushelnyski moved to the American Hockey League to the Cape Breton Oilers , the then farm team of the Edmonton Oilers. There he was used 50 times and scored 41 points scorer. In the NHL, however, he was no longer used. He then forced a move to Europe and went on the ice twice for HC Milano 24 in the 1996/97 season . This was the last stop in his career.
As a trainer
After the end of his active ice hockey career Krushelnyski worked between 1997 and 1999, first in the Central Hockey League with the Fort Worth Fire as a coach. There he missed qualifying for the play-offs twice. When the club was dissolved in 1999 due to unsuccessfulness, he left the club. He later coached in the 2007/08 season, the ERC Ingolstadt of the German Ice Hockey League and finally the Russian team Vityaz Chekhov of the Continental Hockey League.
