Career

Steve Leach was born in Cambridge and played for the Matignon High School team there in his youth . In the 1984 NHL Entry Draft , the right winger was selected in 34th position by the Washington Capitals , before enrolling at the University of New Hampshire a little later . After 37 scorer points in 41 games as a freshman , the American was elected to the all-rookie team of Hockey East in 1985 , before making his debut with the Washington Capitals in the National Hockey League (NHL) the following year with 17 appearances . The following season 1986/87 the attacker spent mainly with the farm team of the Capitals, the Binghamton Whalers , in the American Hockey League (AHL), before a nearly complete season in the dress of the national team followed.

With the beginning of the 1988/89 season, Leach established himself in the NHL squad of the Capitals and produced there in the following three years around 30 points. In June 1991, however, the Capitals gave it to the Boston Bruins and received Randy Burridge in return . In the first two seasons in Boston, the striker achieved by far his best personal statistics, with 60 and 51 points scorer respectively. At these performances he could in consequence, among other things, due to injuries and reduced operating time, unable to match, so he attended during his fifth season in Boston in March 1996. St. Louis Blues has been delivered, which in return Kevin Sawyer and Steve Staios after Washington sent.

As early as June 1997, the Blues Leach, who had only come on 31 missions in over a year, transferred to the Carolina Hurricanes , who in turn gave Oleksandr Hodynjuk and their six- round voting rights in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft . After one season, his expiring contract was not extended there, so he spent the 1998/99 season on the Free Agency with the Ottawa Senators and the Phoenix Coyotes or their respective farm teams. Also as a free agent, the attacker came to the Pittsburgh Penguins in October 1999 , where he was on the ice again more regularly with 56 missions. After only two games for the Louisville Panthers from the AHL in the 2000/01 season, he ended his active career.

Overall, Leach came to 794 games in the NHL and scored 130 goals with 283 points scorer. After serving in the same role in the 2006/07 season for the Philadelphia Flyers , he has been a scout for the Calgary Flames since the 2008/09 season .

For his home country, Leach played three years in a row for the US U20 team at the Junior World Championships between 1984 and 1986 . He led the team after sixth places in 1984 and 1985 with eleven scorer points to the bronze medal in 1986. He was the seventh-best scorer of the entire tournament and best of the team.

For the senior national team Leach ran - in addition to numerous test matches in the 1987/88 season - at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Canada . The Team USA finished in seventh place there, including the striker a goal and two additional templates contributed.
