The following season 1986/87 the attacker spent mainly with the farm team of the Capitals, the Binghamton Whalers , in the American Hockey League (AHL), before a nearly complete season in the dress of the national team followed.
With the beginning of the 1988/89 season, Leach established himself in the NHL squad of the Capitals and produced there in the following three years around 30 points. In June 1991, however, the Capitals gave it to the Boston Bruins and received Randy Burridge in return . In the first two seasons in Boston, the striker achieved by far his best personal statistics, with 60 and 51 points scorer respectively. At these performances he could in consequence, among other things, due to injuries and reduced operating time, unable to match, so he attended during his fifth season in Boston in March 1996. As early as June 1997, the Blues Leach, who had only come on 31 missions in over a year, transferred to the Carolina Hurricanes , who in turn gave Oleksandr Hodynjuk and their six- round voting rights in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft . After one season, his expiring contract was not extended there, so he spent the 1998/99 season on the Free Agency with the Ottawa Senators and the Phoenix Coyotes or their respective farm teams. Also as a free agent, the attacker came to the Pittsburgh Penguins in October 1999 , where he was on the ice again more regularly with 56 missions. After only two games for the Louisville Panthers from the AHL in the 2000/01 season, he ended his active career.
Overall, Leach came to 794 games in the NHL and scored 130 goals with 283 points scorer. After serving in the same role in the 2006/07 season for the Philadelphia Flyers , he has been a scout for the Calgary Flames since the 2008/09 season .
