The Meadowlands Arena (formerly "Izod Center") is a multifunctional hall in the Meadowlands Sports Complex in the US borough of East Rutherford in the state of New Jersey .

history

Construction began on February 2, 1979 and the inauguration took place on July 2, 1981. The first events were six sold out Bruce Springsteen concerts . It was the home of the New Jersey Nets' NBA basketball team until 2010 and the home of the New Jersey Devils ( NHL ) ice hockey team , which moved to the new Prudential Center in Newark , until the summer of 2007 .

In the summer of 2010, the New Jersey Nets also moved to Newark. The Nets played their last game at the Izod Center on April 12, 2010 against the Charlotte Bobcats .

The last remaining sports team were the Rams , the basketball team from Fordham University , which played most of the games at the Izod Center in the 2010/11 season. In addition, the Izod Center continued to be a popular place for concerts, shows and trade fairs.

On January 15, 2015, the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority (NJSEA) decided to close the hall within a few weeks due to the high maintenance costs and the resulting losses. The one month maintenance of the Izod Center in 2014 was $ 750,000. From 2011 to 2014, spending increased from $ 4 million to $ 34.3 million. The future of the hall is uncertain. The center may be demolished to make way for a hotel.
