The Cleveland Gladiators are an arena football team from Cleveland , Ohio that played in the Arena Football League (AFL). The franchise was founded as New Jersey Red Dogs in 1997 and changed its name to New Jersey Gladiators in 2001 . 2003 followed the move to Las Vegas to the Las Vegas Gladiators, before the last move to the Cleveland Gladiators took place in 2008 .
history
The current owner is Daniel Gilbert, founder of Quicken Loans , a US mortgage financer . The franchise was able to move into the playoffs eight times in its history.
New Jersey Red Dogs (1997-2000)
The franchise was founded in 1997 as New Jersey Red Dogs, which could reach the playoffs in their first two seasons.
Since Red Dog is a well-known beer brand in America, opponents of alcohol have achieved that the name Red Dogs is inappropriate in a sports club. In addition, America’s second largest brewery was Miller , sponsoring the franchise. The franchise was then sold and the name changed.
New Jersey Gladiators (2001-2002)
The Gladiators reached the playoffs in 2002 and everything looked like the franchise would remain in New Jersey . Ticket packages and season tickets were already being sold before it was announced just a week before the first game of the season that the franchise was moving to Las Vegas , Nevada , which was a shock for fans and met with incomprehension.
Las Vegas Gladiators (2003-2007)
In the five years in Las Vegas, the Gladiators reached the playoffs only once. After viewership plummeted, the franchise moved to another city for the last time. From 2008 they played in Cleveland, Ohio.
Cleveland Gladiators (2008-present)
Their most successful time was in Cleveland, with five playoffs, including an ArenaBowl participation in 2014. However, they lost this clearly with 32:72 against the Arizona Rattles. After the 2017 season, the Gladiators announced that they would be on hold for two seasons as their stadium needed major renovations.
