Michael Joseph "Mike" McPhee (born July 14, 1960 in Sydney , Nova Scotia ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player . In his professional career, which lasted from 1982 to 1994, the left winger completed over 800 games in the National Hockey League , most of them for the Canadiens de Montréal , with whom he won the Stanley Cup in 1986 .
Career
Mike McPhee was born in Sydney and played in his youth for the Strait Pirates in Port Hawkesbury , Nova Scotia. In 1978 he began studying civil engineering at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), which he graduated in 1982. During this time he took part with their ice hockey team in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 1980 in 124th position by the Canadiens de Montréal . The attacker then spent almost two full seasons with the Canadiens' farm team , the Nova Scotia Voyageurs , in the American Hockey League before making his debut in the National Hockey League (NHL) in March 1984 .
In Montréal, McPhee quickly developed into a constant scorer, scoring around 40 points in almost every season . In total, the winger spent ten years in the organization of the Canadiens and won the Stanley Cup with the team in 1986 . In 1989 the team reached the final one more time, but lost to the Calgary Flames . In addition, McPhee was appointed to the NHL All-Star Game in 1989 to replace the injured Mats Näslund .
In August 1992, the Canadiens gave him to the Minnesota North Stars and received a five-round vote in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft . After just a year, McPhee moved the franchise to Dallas , where it was renamed Dallas Stars . After another season with the Stars, he had a knee injury treated surgically in September 1994, due to which, however, he subsequently ended his active career in the summer of 1995 on the advice of doctors, without having played in the 1994/95 season, which was shortened by the lockout . Overall, McPhee completed 878 NHL games and recorded 228 goals at 354 points.
After the end of his active career, McPhee continued his studies at the University of Dallas , where he received his Master of Business Administration and worked as a financial advisor.
