Gordon Jay Wells (born May 18, 1959 in Paris , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and current coach. In his 18-season career, he played for the Los Angeles Kings , Philadelphia Flyers , Buffalo Sabers , New York Rangers , St. Louis Blues and the Tampa Bay Lightning in the National Hockey League on the position of defender . In 1994 he won the Stanley Cup with the Rangers . Most recently he was assistant coach for the American Hockey League club Manitoba Moose .
Career
Jay Wells was born in the small ontarian town of Paris . In his youth he played for the Kingston Canadians in the Ontario Major Junior Hockey League . In the Canadiens, the player completed a total of three seasons. At the end of his third and final junior season, Wells was inducted into the OMJHL's First All-Star team. In the 1979 NHL Entry Draft , the Canadian was selected in the first round in a total of 16th position by the Los Angeles Kings .
Wells began the 1979/80 NHL season with Los Angeles' farm team , the Binghamton Dusters , in the American Hockey League . In Binghamton, the defender completed 28 games and was then part of the Kings' regular squad. Jay Wells spent a total of nine seasons with the Kings, he was particularly noticeable for his body-hugging game; so he received 226 penalty minutes in 79 completed games in the 1985/86 season . In each of his nine seasons in Los Angeles, the player achieved penalty minutes in the three-digit range.
On September 29, 1989, shortly before the start of the 1988/89 season , Jay Wells was transferred to the Philadelphia Flyers . Los Angeles received the player Doug Crossman in return . In Philadelphia, he maintained his tough pace and reached in 133 games for the Flyers 313 penalty minutes before he was transferred again on March 5, 1990: The player was together with a four-round draft pick for the 1991 NHL Entry Draft in exchange for Kevin Maguire as well as a second round draft pick for the 1990 NHL Entry Draft sent to the Buffalo Sabers . Almost two years later, on March 9, 1992, the Sabers transferred him to the New York Rangers in exchange for Randy Moller .
The player stayed in New York until the end of the 1994/95 season . In the previous season he won the Stanley Cup with the Rangers after the Vancouver Canucks were defeated in the final . On July 31, 1995, Wells was sent to the St. Louis Blues , the New York Rangers received Doug Lidster in return . After a season with the Blues, the defender signed a contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning before the start of the 1996/97 season , for which he played 21 games to end his career following this season.
After his active career, he initially worked for one season as assistant coach of the American Hockey League team Portland Pirates , and from 1998 to 2001 as assistant coach at the Hershey Bears . After a break, he worked again as an assistant coach in 2008/09 , this time at the AHL club Manitoba Moose .
