Robert Emmett Sweeney (born January 25, 1964 in Concord , Massachusetts ) is a former American ice hockey player who played for the Boston Bruins , Buffalo Sabers , New York Islanders and Calgary Flames from the National Hockey League during his career was active.
Career
Sweeney began his career in 1982 at Boston College . There he played for the ice hockey team in the US college leagues ECAC Hockey and Hockey East . During the NHL Entry Draft 1982 he was selected by those in charge of the Boston Bruins in the sixth round at a total of 123rd position. After studying for four years, the American finished his studies in the summer of 1986 and then moved to the National Hockey League for the Boston Bruins. The Bruins first used him in their farm team at the time , the Moncton Golden Flames , in the East Coast Hockey League . From the 1987/88 season he was part of the Bruins' regular squad.
In 1991 he left Boston and joined the Buffalo Sabers, for which the offensive player completed 199 NHL games in the following years, scoring 85 points . After being on the ice in 66 games for the New York Islanders as well as eight games for the Calgary Flames in the 1995/96 season , he forced a move to Europe in the summer of 1997. There he was signed by the management of Revierlöwen Oberhausen from the German Ice Hockey League , for which he only laced his skates 27 times and then moved to league competitor Frankfurt Lions .
His contract, which expired at the end of the 1998/99 season, was not renewed. Sweeney then joined the Munich Barons , with whom he won the German championship in the 1999/2000 season . In 2001, the right-handed shooter ended his active ice hockey career at the age of 37.
