He then played for two years for the Oshawa Generals in the top junior league of the Ontario Hockey Association . During this period he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 1979 in the third round as a total of 62nd player from the Nordiques de Québec . For the Nordiques, the defender made his debut in the National Hockey League in the 1980/81 season , but initially could not assert himself there, which is why he spent most of the season with their farm team Hershey Bears in the American Hockey League . The 1981/82 season he began as a regular with the new AHL farm team Fredericton Express , while he came in the NHL only to two more missions for the Nordiques. Finally he was transferred to the Washington Capitals in February 1982 within the NHL , where he was a regular player until the end of the season. In the 1982/83 season , however, he was mostly given to the AHL farm team Hershey Bears, for which he had already accrued during his time with the Nordiques.

The season 1983/84 spent Norwood after a transfer in exchange for David Shand with the St. Catharines Saints in the AHL. He then moved to the 1984/85 season to the Peoria Rivermen from the International Hockey League . In Peoria he was able to convince and was awarded the best defender in the league by being elected to the First All-Star Team of the IHL and the Governor's Trophy . The 1985/86 season he finally spent back in the NHL after him St. Louis Blues as a free agent had contracted. From 1986 to 1990, the American was on the ice for the Detroit Red Wings , for whose AHL farm team Adirondack Red Wings he also completed three games. At the beginning of the 1990/91 season he was signed by the New Jersey Devils . The following season he began with the Hartford Whalers , for which he only played six games before returning to his ex-team St. Louis Blues for the next two years. In the 1993/94 season , the left shooter defended for the NHL team Calgary Flames and the San Diego Gulls from the IHL. After a one-year break, he laced up the ice skates for IHL competitors Chicago Wolves and Detroit Vipers in the 1995/96 season . Most recently he appeared in the 1996/97 season for the Saginaw Lumber Kings in the Colonial Hockey League and the San Antonio Dragons in the IHL.

For the 1997/98 season , Norwood took over as head coach at the Central Texas Stampede from the Western Professional Hockey League . With his team he failed in the first playoff round at the Shreveport Mudbugs .
