The 1997/98 season was the second regular season of the Western Professional Hockey League . The twelve regular WPHL teams completed 69 games each in the regular season , while the HK Traktor Chelyabinsk from the Russian Super League played a game as a visiting team against each of the other teams. The team with the highest points in the regular season were the Fort Worth Brahmas , while the El Paso Buzzards won the President's Cup for the second time in the play-offs .
Team changes
The following changes were made before the start of the season:
- The Russian ice hockey club HK Traktor Chelyabinsk took part as a visiting team in the WPHL and played a total of twelve season games.
- The Fort Worth Brahmas were added to the league as an expansion team.
- The Lake Charles Ice Pirates were added to the league as an expansion team.
- The Monroe Moccasins were added to the league as an expansion team.
- The Odessa Jackalopes were added to the league as an expansion team.
- The San Angelo Outlaws were added to the league as an expansion team.
- The Shreveport Mudbugs were added to the league as an expansion team.
