The 2000/01 season was the fifth and final regular season of the Western Professional Hockey League . The 14 teams were supposed to play 72 games each in the regular season , but the schedule had to be changed due to the early financial elimination of the Central Texas Stampede . The team with the highest points in the regular season was the Tupelo T-Rex , while the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs won the President's Cup for the third time in the play-offs . The New Mexico Scorpions were deducted a total of 34 points due to the salary cap being exceeded several times . After the season, the WPHL merged with the Central Hockey League , which then took on ten of the 14 teams for the 2001/02 season .
