Career

Higgins spent his junior years in his native Ottawa . There he was initially active for the Ottawa Junior Senators in the Central Ontario Junior Hockey League (COJHL) in the 1974/75 season , before he was signed over the course of the season by the Ottawa 67’s , who were responsible for the Ontario Major Junior Hockey League (OMJHL) participated. There the winger developed continuously until the end of the 1977/78 season and in his third year in the league was responsible for the fact that the 67's could win the J. Ross Robertson Cup at the end of the season . In the subsequent participation in the prestigious Memorial Cup , he was behind Bobby Smith and Doug Wilson third-best scorer of the team that lost in the final game to the New Westminster Bruins . In the summer of 1978, the 19-year-old was selected after completing his time in the junior division in the 1978 NHL Amateur Draft at the tenth overall position of the Chicago Black Hawks from the National Hockey League (NHL). Before that, he had broken the 100 scorer point mark for the first time during the regular season .

The Black Hawks immediately brought the young striker into their expanded squad for the 1978/79 season and from December 1978, after playing a few games for the New Brunswick Hawks farm team in the American Hockey League (AHL), regularly used him in the NHL . In his rookie year he collected 23 points in 36 races. In the 1979/80 season , the Canadian played almost all of the season's games as a regular player and stayed there until the 1983/84 season . He played in the 1980/81 season with 59 points scorer, his best year in the league; in the following season he scored 50 times. In January 1984 Higgins, who had to show only five goals in the first 32 appearances of the season, was transferred to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for Jeff Larmer . There his offensive yield improved noticeably, so that by the end of the 1984/85 season he had reached 48 scorer points. After a 1985/86 game year marked by injuries and illnesses , the attacker was transferred to the Detroit Red Wings in June 1986 . They let Claude Loiselle move to the Devils for this.

With the Red Wings Higgins spent three seasons, but in which he could no longer match his previous performances. After he had also accumulated in the 1988/89 season for Detroit's cooperation partner Adirondack Red Wings in the AHL, he was released from his current contract in April 1989. The 30-year-old then ended his active career. Between 1991 and 1993 Higgins was then al Scout for the Ottawa Senators in the NHL. He performed the same function between 1996 and 2003 with his ex-team, the Chicago Blackhawks.
