Thomas Joseph McCarthy (born July 31, 1960 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and current coach who played 529 games for the Minnesota North Stars and Boston Bruins in the National Hockey League during his playing career between 1979 and 1989 on the position of the left winger . Since summer 2016 he has been the head coach of the Romanian club HSC Csíkszereda in the southeast European MOL league .

Career

McCarthy played during his junior years between 1976 and 1979 in the Ontario Provincial Junior Hockey League and the Ontario Major Junior Hockey League among others for the Kingston Canadians and Oshawa Generals . At the same time, he was studying sports administration at Durham College . His achievements - among other things, he recorded 144 scorer points in his last junior year and he was elected to the First All-Star Team of the OMJHL - led the striker in the 1979 NHL Entry Draft to the tenth overall position of the Minnesota North Stars from the National Hockey League was selected.

The attacker finally moved to the North Stars in the professional field for the 1979/80 season , after he had turned down a contract offer from the Birmingham Bulls from the World Hockey Association the year before . The 19-year-old had a solid rookie season in Minnesota with 36 points scorer in 68 games. McCarthy was also part of the North Stars' regular squad for the next six years. He had his best year in the 1982/83 season with 76 scorer points and an invitation to the NHL All-Star Game . In the game years 1984/85 and 1985/86 the attacker was thrown back by injuries and illnesses and fell out of large parts of the season 1985/86 due to an idiopathic facial nerve palsy .

In May 1986 McCarthy was transferred to the Boston Bruins . In return, the Bruins received a third-round vote in the 1986 NHL Entry Draft and a second-round vote in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft . There he was able to build on previous performances in the first of two seasons with 59 points in 68 games. The 1987/88 season was then less successful, as he hardly played and was also used in the American Hockey League . He let his career finally the following year at HC Asiago in the Italian Serie A finish.

After the end of his active career, McCarthy came into conflict with the law. He received a five-year and ten-month prison sentence for trading in marijuana , serving in both the United States and Canada from 1994 onwards . In 1998 he was released early from prison. McCarthy devoted himself to his coaching career and after the end of his imprisonment was primarily responsible for numerous junior teams, including in the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League and Ontario Junior Hockey League . In the summer of 2016, the ex-player took on his first coaching position both in the men's area and outside North America when he was signed by the Romanian club HSC Csíkszereda from the Southeast European MOL league .
