Joel Stuart Otto (born October 29, 1961 in Elk River , Minnesota ) is a former American ice hockey player and coach who played 1065 games for the Calgary Flames and Philadelphia Flyers in the National between 1981 and 1998 Hockey League . In the service of the Calgary Flames, Otto celebrated the greatest success of his career by winning the Stanley Cup in 1989 . He was also successful with the US national team at the 1996 World Cup of Hockey .
Career
Joel Otto studied at Bemidji State University and played for the university team in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association , a league in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . After strong seasons between 1982 and 1984, he signed a contract with the Calgary Flames just before the start of the 1984/85 season .
In his first season he often ran on the farm team , the Moncton Golden Flames , in the American Hockey League , but also played 17 games for the Calgary Flames in the NHL. He was also in the NHL squad in the playoffs and had two goals and one assist in three appearances. He then supported the US national team at the 1985 Ice Hockey World Championship in Prague . The following 1985/86 season brought Otto the final breakthrough in the NHL. With 25 goals and 59 points, he reached records that he should no longer achieve in his career. Otto was an important player for the Flames, as he played an important role not only offensively but also defensively thanks to his physical strength. Not only did he score over 50 points four years in a row, he also scored more than 180 penalty minutes in each of these years. Whenever it was important, he impressed with his presence. When the Flames first reached the Stanley Cup finals in 1986 , he contributed 15 points in 22 games. In 1987 he represented his home country at the Canada Cup . In 1989 he reached the final series of the Stanley Cup again with the Flames. With 19 points he had a large share in the first win of the cup. In the 1990 Men's World Ice Hockey Championships and the 1991 Canada Cup , he represented the United States again. In the mid-1990s, those responsible for the Flames rebuilt the team, and there was no more space for the experienced Otto in the team.
In late July 1995 he signed with the Philadelphia Flyers . Eric Lindros' team consisted almost exclusively of tall players. Otto came in very well here. With the USA he won the 1996 World Cup of Hockey . In the 1996/97 season he reached the Finals with the Flyers, in which they were subject to the Detroit Red Wings . He played another year with the Flyers and ended his active career after the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano .
Since 2006 he has been an assistant coach for the Calgary Hitmen in the Western Hockey League .
