geography
Elk River is 45 ° 19'2 "north latitude and 93 ° 34'52" west longitude. The river of the same name, the Elk River, flows into the Mississippi River here . The center of Minneapolis is located approximately 50 kilometers to the southeast. The Interstate 94 highway runs past the city about ten kilometers southwest.
History
In 1805 Zebulon Pike saw large herds of elk ( Cervus canadensis ) (English: "Elk") in the area and therefore called the place and river "Elk River". In 1846 a small trading post was set up and the place grew slowly. The potential of water power on the rivers was recognized as early as 1851, and a small dam and a sawmill were built in nearby Orono . At the end of the 19th century agriculture largely replaced forestry and flour mills were now built. Around 1872, the newly laid railway line served the previous transport routes on the rivers. The Orono Dam was destroyed by an ice storm in 1912, but a new, larger dam was commissioned as early as 1915, which was used to generate electricity and supplied electricity to Elk River. Other power plants fired with oil or gas followed.
In 1964 the Elk River nuclear power plant went into operation. In the 1970s, the reactor was demolished again and the power plant modified so that today only waste products ( refuse-derived fuel ) from the area are burned. Due to the variety of different processes for energy generation, the city is nicknamed "Energy City" or the addition "Powered By Nature".
Elk River is growing steadily because of its proximity to the metropolis of Minneapolis, its industry and its attractive location with 44 parks.
