Sherburne County was formed on February 25, 1856 from parts of Benton County. It was named after Moses Sherburne , a former Minnesota Supreme Court Justice.

According to the 2010 census , there were 88,499 people in 29,572 households in Sherburne County. The population density was 78.3 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, there were 2.91 people each in the 29,572 households.
