The county is located southeast of the geographic center of Minnesota on the left bank of the Upper Mississippi at the mouth of the Elk River . It has an area of 1168 square kilometers, of which 38 square kilometers are water. The following neighboring counties border Sherburne County:

Sherburne County was formed on February 25, 1856 from parts of Benton County. It was named after Moses Sherburne , a former Minnesota Supreme Court Justice.
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census , there were 88,499 people in 29,572 households in Sherburne County. The population density was 78.3 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, there were 2.91 people each in the 29,572 households.
The racial the population was composed of 94.5 percent white, 2.0 percent African American, 0.5 percent Native American, 1.3 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.6 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity, 2.2 percent of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.
