geography
The county is located in southwest Minnesota on the plateau called Coteau des Prairies , which extends to Iowa in the south and South Dakota in the west. history
Pipestone County was formed on May 23, 1857 from parts of Brown County. It was named after the quarries of the mineral catlinite , from which the Prairie Indians carve the heads of their peace pipes. The pits are designated as Pipestone National Monument .
